A local woman has set an ambitious goal: Stuff 30 new backpacks with various back to school items.

For the last few years, WBFF Pro Allyson Genovese has partnered with the local community to sponsor the Backpack Challenge for Underprivileged Children. Two years ago, she was able to collect two backpacks worth of supplies, due to a later start. Last year she was able to collect 15 backpacks worth of supplies.

“This year’s goal is 30 backpacks,” Genovese said.

Once everything is collected, the backpacks are dropped off at Southington Community Services.

Genovese said the idea to begin the collection dated back to when she worked at Prudential in Shelton. The company would adopt two children and help gather back to school supplies for them.

The collection will run through August 9. Anyone interested in donating new school supplies can contact Genovese at fitmodelallyg@aol.com or drop off the donations at Villari’s Martial Arts Center, 405 Queen St. in Southington.
