Community Services Department holds logo contest

The Community Services Department has invited the community to help design a new logo, and the winner’s artwork will be placed on the department’s van and seen all over town.

Director Janet Mellon said she was hoping for an image that would eventually become synonymous with the department and recognized all over Southington.

“When you see that tree logo, you think of STEPS,” Mellon said. “You think of the YMCA when you see that big Y. We wanted something like that.”

The idea is coming in the midst of greater community focus on local artists and their work, which Mellon hopes will translate to more participation. Finalists will be shown to the Town Council, who will pick a winner.

The deadline for entries is Friday, May 24. Participants can drop their entries off at the department’s headquarters on 91 Norton Street, mail them or email to mellonj@southington.org. The winning artist will receive a Southington basket full of small gifts.

“I’m excited about all the different possibilities,” Mellon said. “It will be really neat to see what people think of as a symbol for us.”
