Band practices for Surround Sound

The Southington High School Marching Band is bringing back its indoor “Surround Sound” concert for three performances beginning on March 8.
“It’s the Marching Band experience, but indoors and on stage,” said Joanne Kelleher, publicity chair for the Southington Band Backers. “Depending on the song, we’ll have drums, bass and the color guard.”
The Surround Sound concert is not an annual event – this will be the sixth time the marching band has hosted it since 2003. Last year, it was brought back to make up for the cancellation of the 2011 Music of the Knight event after the infamous October snowstorm. Winter weather has caused some trouble for this year’s concert as well, but not to the same degree.
“We’ve lost a few rehearsals thanks to snow, but usually you don’t have to worry as much about weather with this one,” said SHS music director Jeff Shaw. “It’s easier to manage, but still a lot of moving parts because this is an hour of music.”
This year, about 80 students will be participating in the performance. The theme of the show is “Knightmare on Pleasant Street” and most of the songs in the program are themes from classic horror films.
“It’s really fun,” said Chris DeVona, who plays percussion and mellophone. “The darker style always seems to be more fun. You can be really creative with the props and makeup.”
Since the Surround Sound concert is not a marching band competition, the Southington students do not have to share the time with rival bands. This allows for a lengthy concert for a hometown crowd.
“It’s very different from last year, but I think it’s a neat direction to go in,” said Will Simms, who plays tuba and bass guitar.
Last year, one of the two shows was completely sold out while the other came close. This year three performances are planned on March 8, 9, and 10, all at 7 pm. Tickets can be purchased from band members, The Music Shop or Play it Again Sports.
