Youth earns hero award from American Legion Auxiliary

DePaolo Middle School student Jeremy Spooner was recently presented with an American Legion Auxiliary Youth Hero Award for his actions in saving the life of his father in November 2011.

Jeremy had learned the Heimlich maneuver in Health class and would end up using it on his father later that same day.

On the fateful November day, Jeremy had watched a video of the maneuver in class along side his peers. When Jeremy’s father, Michael Spooner, began choking on a piece of bread that evening, he put the Heimlich to its intended use.

The American Legion Auxiliary Youth Hero Award is a national award given to recognize youth who demonstrate a kind caring act of selflessness.
