Students fire prevention posters a hit

A ceremony was held on Jan. 9 for the Connecticut Annual Fire Prevention Poster Contest first place winners at Southington Fire Department Headquarters.
This year’s winners are Tyler Spinelli, Grade 5 from Kelly School and Greta Panke, Grade 4 of Strong School. Both winners received a season’s pass for Lake Compounce and a $50 money order. This year’s event was run by Fire Inspector Robert Hunt in cooperation with the elementary school teachers of Southington.
The event is sponsored by the Connecticut Fire Marshals Association, Connecticut Department of Energy & Environment Protection, Office of State Fire Marshal, Connecticut Fire Chief’s Association, State Board of Education and the Connecticut Fair Plan (representing the insurance industry).
The contest is for fourth and fifth grades throughout the State of Connecticut to promote fire prevention and fire safety.
Approximately 30,000 students of 130 communities take part in this contest annually.
The theme of “Fire Prevention Everyone/Everyday” is used each year.
The local contest awarded several different prizes from local merchants. This contest was held October 1 to November 30.
Special thanks go out to the following sponsors of this year’s contest: Southington Firefighters Local 2033, Lake Compounce, T.D. Homers, Manor Inn Restaurant, Spartans II Restaurant, Cava Restaurant, Pepper Pot Restaurant, Play It Again Sports and Apple Valley Bowling.
Officials were informed by the State Fire Marshals Office that Tyler Spinelli and Greta Panke have both been chosen as Hartford County Winners.
They will both receive a $100 check and attend a luncheon on March 27 for all the county winners.
The county winners will have their posters exhibited at the State Capitol during the month of October.
Two county winners from each grade will be chosen as a state winner and receive a $500 check.
