Sloper registration set to begin

Registration for YMCA Camp Sloper’s 64th year of day camp will open on February 2nd with Online Early Bird Registration. Beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, priority registration for 2012 campers and full members of the Southington and Cheshire Community YMCAs will be accessible through the online registration page by linking from www.ymcacampsloper.org.  There will be no in-person registrations taken for the early-bird registration day. We encourage families with campers who will be doing a specialty camp this summer to register that day if they qualify to do so. Full-membership and/or attendance at camp in 2012 will be verified before the registrations are confirmed.

All other campers may register beginning at 7 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 3 at the Southington or Cheshire Community YMCAs. Registration will be available on-line as well right through the summer months.

Membership is not required to attend YMCA Camp Sloper. Every child who is registered is considered a program member, unless they have a full membership to the Southington or Cheshire YMCA. Campers who have full memberships to the Southington-Cheshire Community YMCAs will pay a rate that reflects a $50 discount per session for each session, in addition to all the other benefits of the YMCA full membership.

“This will be our 64th year of camping at YMCA Camp Sloper and we are very excited about the 2013 day camp season. Our camp families have already started to call with questions about camp registration. Many families try to be the first campers to register. We celebrate this achievement by publicizing a newspaper article about them”, stated Mark Pooler, Camp Director, who will lead YMCA Camp Sloper for his 18th year this summer. YMCA Camp Sloper serves the towns of Southington, Cheshire, Berlin/Kensington and New Britain, and even draws campers from other states and from overseas. “Full members and last year’s campers who are interested in specialty camps should take advantage of the Early Bird Online Registration Day to secure a spot in the camp program of their choice, those tend to be the ones that fill up first,” stated Pooler. The 2013 season will feature some new specialty camp programs including Eco Camp, and Track and Field Camp for children entering grades 3-5, and Survivor Camp, and Triathlon Camp for those entering grades 6-9.

YMCA Camp Sloper offers four consecutive, two-week sessions from July 1st to August 23rd. There is also a one week preview that will be held June 24th to June 28th. The Wanderers program, for 3-5 years old campers, will be offered in one-week sessions from 9AM – 1PM all summer including Preview Week. The day camp program for campers entering Grade K-10 will run Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with extended camp care available before and after camp if needed for an additional cost. Bus transportation is provided in Southington, Cheshire, Berlin/Kensington and New Britain. There is no bus service for Wanderers. Bus schedules will be posted on the website at www.ymcacampsloper.org.

“Last year on-line registration for the first day was a huge success with over 500 registrations taken in.  We hope the Early Bird Online Registration this year will be equally impressive. We believe parents anxiousness to register their children is attributed to the quality programs and many enhancements that continue to be made each year at YMCA Camp Sloper. Now they can do it from the comfort of their own homes as we have gone all on-line for the first day of registration” said Pooler.

Financial assistance is available for qualified families who live in Southington and Cheshire. Payment Plans can also be arranged to spread the cost of camp over an extended period of time. Please contact Lynn Palmieri at the Southington Community YMCA at 860-426-9515 or Karen Thuerk at the Cheshire Community YMCA at 203-272-3150 for more information.

YMCA Camp Sloper is accredited by the American Camp Association, the only independent accrediting organization reviewing camp operations in the country. To qualify for this status, YMCA Camp Sloper is required to meet nationally recognized standards focusing on program quality, healthy, and safety. This assures parents that their children will have a camp experience that is both fun and safe.
