Southington officials are excited by the pending arrival of Connecticut Online Computer Center, an Avon-based company which plans to bring its headquarters to West Street.
Specifically, they will occupy the large building that once housed The Hartford. The insurance company announced its departure from the area in 2010 and gradually vacated the site, which is located very close to Interstate 84 and the Target/Lowe’s plaza.
“We’re very excited,” said Lou Perillo, the town’s Economic Development Coordinator. “This is a prominent company and it will draw attention to Southington’s work force and our central location.”
He added that the company’s arrival had the potential to bring numerous jobs into the community, both for workers at the company itself and the extensive nine-month renovation planned to reshape the building to fit COCC’s needs. The news of the company’s move has already generated a lot of attention and interested calls to the town’s economic development office.
The company specializes in the technology of the banking industry and has been in business since the 1960s. In recent years, it has expanded and now employs over 400 people.
Chamber President Art Secondo commented that the town would be well-served by “the additional commerce.”
“There is enormous potential coming soon on the southerly portion of West Street,” he said. “The addition of several hundred employees at the former Hartford building, and the new hotel several hundred yards away, makes this area a compact retail and commercial oasis for the public. The new tenant could attract others to lease or purchase the remaining Hartford office buildings.”
The new COCC headquarters is expected to open in late 2013.
